Written Exam –Wednesday, May 8th, 2024
The exams may cover the following:
WRITTEN EXAM:
Vocabulary Comprehension: Vocabulary words from weeks 7-11
Story comprehension:
The Big Circle
Honey Bees
Textbooks
Reading Street
Students will study this English Language Arts textbook.
Stories feature sentence structure and vocabulary in line with Common Core.
"Reader's & Writer's Notebook"
Students will write in this notebook which supports the Reading Street stories and vocabulary.
"Phonics B"
Students will study this phonics textbook which reinforces spelling ability and vocabulary.
Testing
Students will be tested as follows:
* Bi-weekly Vocabulary Quizzes are usually given every other Friday.
These quizzes test students’ ability to spell the weekly Vocabulary Words.
How to prepare: Every day read the spelling words and ask student to write the word.
Make a note of any misspelled words, and practice them again the next day.
* Bi-weekly Vocabulary and Story Tests are usually given on the other two Fridays.
These tests assess students’ ability to spell the weekly Vocabulary Words.
In addition, the tests assess students’ comprehension of word definitions.
They also test students’ comprehension of the weekly “Reading Street” story.
How to prepare: Every day read the Vocabulary words and ask student to write the word.
Make a note of any misspelled words, and practice them again the next day.
It is also helpful to ask students what each word means and recite them in example sentences.
Read the current story along with student. Look at the pictures. Ask questions about them.
Encourage student to explain the pictures and the story. If recited answers seem incomplete,
add details and explanations to help the student heighten comprehension.
* Oral Exams are usually given once every Midterm.
These tests assess students’ speaking ability. They will be asked to respond to questions.
How to prepare: Read the Weekly Conversation sentences to the student. If there is a questioning sentence, ask student to answer it. Ask student to recite the sentences out loud.
* Listening Exams are usually given once every Midterm.
These tests assess students’ listening comprehension. They will listen to the teacher read words and sentences, then mark the answer they hear.
How to prepare: Select some sentences from the current weekly “Reading Street” story. See if the student can correctly write down the sentence in their notebook.
* Written Exams are usually given once every Midterm.
These tests assess students’ overall English comprehension of the recent Vocabulary and “Reading Street” stories.
How to prepare: Review all the recent Vocabulary Words and “Reading Street” stories.

Content of this week’s English classes:
* Students will study the Conversation Patterns.
These are sentences under the Vocabulary Words in the Communication Book each week.
Students will recite these sentences.
Students will respond to teacher’s questions based on these sentences.
This exercise will give students the opportunity to practice English speaking.
Questions from the Conversation Patterns may appear on the next Oral Exam.
* Students will study the Vocabulary.
This is the two-column list of words in the Communication Book each week.
Students will recite these words.
Students will practice spelling these words.
Students will practice unscrambling these words.
This exercise builds vocabulary which heightens English language ability.
Questions about the story may appear on the next Listening Exam.
* Students will study the current story in “Reading Street”.
This is the story listed at the top of the Communication Book each week.
Students will listen/view the story on Youtube.
Students will read the story with the teacher.
Students will respond to teacher’s questions about the story.
This exercise will enhance students’ reading comprehension.
Questions about the story may appear on the next Written Exam.
* Students will be given a “Review Worksheet".
This is a study aid designed to prepare for an upcoming weekly Test.
Students will complete the worksheet as Homework, then review it in class with the teacher.
The Review Worksheet format is similar to the weekly Test.

Students will usually be given Homework each day.

Review VW from Weeks 7-11 as well as the stories, "The Big Circle" and "Honey Bees".
This helps prepare for the Written Exam.
Tuesday Homework:
Review VW from Weeks 7-11 as well as the stories, "The Big Circle" and "Honey Bees".
This helps prepare for the Written Exam.
Wednesday Homework:
In the Reading Street textbook read pages 10-19.
Thursday Homework:
In the Reading Street textbook read pages 20-35.
Friday Homework:
Complete the Reading Street worksheet, p. 13-14.
